  • Letting go: Giving students more control in Moodle

In this workshop, the presenter will demonstrate the features in Moodle that can be used to facilitate constructivist pedagogy. Participants will be given access to a Moodle system where they will be able to get hands-on experience of the features being described. Moodle advertises itself as being "designed to support a social constructionist framework of education." Yet, it is just as possible to use Moodle to perpetuate the traditional roles of teacher and student, as it is to create a course that frees students from the strictures of 'sage on the stage' type pedagogies. Indeed, in a recent interview, Martin Dougiamas, the creator of Moodle, remarked that one of the biggest challenges facing Moodle is that "despite the pedagogical thinking that went into Moodle and the many tools we have in our one and a half million lines of code," many teachers just use it to upload documents. In this workshop, the audience will learn how they can do much more with Moodle than simply using it as a repository of handouts and quizzes. They will find out about and experience the features in Moodle that allow students to collaborate with their peers in order to construct new knowledge. Such features include: the database module, the wiki module, the forum module, the new Question Creation module, blogging, roles and groups. By the end of this workshop, the audience should be able to have their own students take a much more active, constructive and collaborative role in their Moodle courses.
  • Enhancing Moodle Courses with Student and Teacher Created Multimedia

In this workshop the presenter will demonstrate how both students and teachers can create multimedia for Moodle courses using freely available tools and the features within Moodle. Participants will have access to a Moodle system where they will be able to practice these multimedia skills. The addition of multimedia to online environments can enhance the educational effectiveness of a course. Furthermore, getting students involved in the creation of content allows them to develop both their digital literacy and a sense of ownership of their education. Yet, many teachers find adding multimedia problematic because of the various skills and applications that need to be mastered. For the purposes of this workshop, multimedia will include: images, sound files, movies, "borrowed media" (YouTube, etc.) and media that can be created online such as "VoiceThreads". The audience will discover what hardware and software their students need in order to be able to see and hear multimedia. They will also be told about the settings that need to be made within a Moodle system to make multimedia display within Moodle courses. They will then be shown how to produce various multimedia objects, which will include the creation of mp3s with Audacity (the free audio editing software) and the creation of movies with mobile phones. They will then be shown how to embed multimedia into a Moodle course using the standard HTML editor. By the end of this workshop, the audience will be able to enhance their own Moodle courses with images, sounds and movies.
